A word from the Creator...Therese Forton-Barnes

Therese's Bio

"I have recovered over 80 very large tree trunks from The October storm of '06 from Buffalo and Erie County, and I am still getting more as crews cut them down. Some of them are 75-200 years old. I couldn't bear having them chopped up for wood and am in the process of having them all carved into larger than life size, significant local figures or symbols from our region (Grover Cleveland, Frederick Law Olmsted, Frank Lloyd Wright,Joyce Carol Oates, Jim Kelly, a Buffalo, an Eagle, etc. - See our GALLERY for works in progress). They will be placed throughout the region and will tell a wonderful story of Western New York's rich heritage. Carvings for a Cause is a reflection of our community that cares deeply about a place we call home, and is something our community can cherish and enjoy for many years to come."

It is going to be very exciting for all to enjoy. I look at it as a way to make lemonade out of lemons!

Drawing from the rich heritage of our WNY region, the list of potential carvings is growing! Click here to view.

Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada
A similar project that has been a huge success, is in Truro, Nova Scotia. The Dutch Elm Disease was the cause of their unfortunate situation and instead of cutting their trees down they had sculptors make historical Figures out of each one. See the Truro Tree Project Gallery

Orangeville, Ontario, Canada
The Art Walk of Tree Sculptures for Orangeville has attracted a lot of attention from residents, visitors and other municipalities since it was initiated in 2002. The project gives trees a new life after they have been declared beyond hope by the municipal arborist.

Re-Tree WNY was established on November 3, 2006 by a group of about 40 Western New York residents who saw first-hand the devastation done to our beautiful WNY living resource -- our trees -- and decided to take action to re-forest every public area that was destroyed by the freak October 12-13, 2006 snowstorm.

Rick Pratt
has been carving now for almost ten years. He and his wife live with their five children in a small town outside Buffalo, N.Y. Rick's major carving pieces have been custom-ordered stump carvings, where the customer has him come to their property and carve a tree that is still in the ground. He also creates Free-Standing Sculpture and Exterior/Interior Home Designing...
